You know the bra. The one you reach for when you’re getting dressed for work, running errands, or pulling on your favorite white tee. Smooth cups, a comfortable fit, and nothing showing through your shirt.

Until one day, something feels different.

The cups start gapping along the top. You’re adjusting the straps more often. The band doesn’t feel as secure as it used to.

Before you assume you need a different cup size, take a closer look at the bra itself. Your everyday favorite may be showing its age.

Why a Bra That Fit Before Can Start Gapping

A well-fitted bra depends on all its parts working together. The band anchors it around your body, while the straps help keep the cups positioned properly.

Over time, that band stretches. As it loses its ability to stay snug and secure, the bra can shift—and cups that once sat smoothly against your body may start pulling away.

With a molded T-shirt bra, that change can be especially noticeable because the cups have a set shape.

That doesn’t mean every gap is a sign of a worn-out bra. Changes in breast fullness, strap adjustments, and a cup shape that doesn’t suit your body can also play a part. Our guide to why bra cups gap explains those possibilities.

But if the same bra used to fit beautifully and gradually stopped feeling secure, checking the band is a good place to start.

How Often Should You Replace Your Bra?

There isn’t one replacement date that makes sense for everyone.

Think about how often you wear it. A bra you reach for several times a week gets more use than one you rotate among several favorites. How you wash, dry, and store it matters, too.

Rather than relying only on the calendar, look for changes in how it fits:

  • The band feels loose on the tightest hook. You’ve used the available adjustments, but it still won’t stay secure.
  • You’re constantly repositioning it. The band shifts, the cups move, or you keep pulling everything back into place.
  • The cups have changed shape. Dents, curling edges, or distortion can affect that smooth finish under clothing.
  • The support isn’t what it used to be. Tightening the straps no longer gets you back to a comfortable fit.

One sign alone may call for an adjustment. Several together are a good reason to bring the bra in for a fit check.

If your bra still feels secure, holds its shape, and stays comfortable throughout the day, its age alone doesn’t mean you need to replace it.

What Those Extra Hooks Are For

A new bra should generally fit securely on the loosest hook. That gives you room to move inward as the band stretches with wear.

Eventually, though, there may be no adjustment left.

If the tightest hook still leaves the band loose or riding up, tightening the straps won’t restore the band’s support. Our guide to how tight a bra band should feel can help you check what a secure fit should feel like.

Help Your Everyday Favorite Last

Start with the care label, and keep your bras out of the dryer. Heat can damage molded cups, affecting their shape and fit.

Wash gently as directed and let them air-dry. When putting molded bras away, avoid crushing the cups or folding one inside the other. Give them enough room to keep their shape.

Having a few everyday T-shirt bras you feel comfortable in also helps spread the wear. We understand the temptation to reach for the same one every morning. Rotating the favorites you already own is a simple place to start.

What If It Never Quite Fit?

A bra that has always gapped deserves a different look from one that gradually became loose.

Sometimes the molded cup’s shape simply doesn’t match your natural fullness. If that sounds familiar, our guide to spacer bras and traditional molded cups explains another option for that smooth look under clothing.

The goal is to understand what’s causing the gap before deciding what to change.

A Bra That Doesn’t Fit You May Still Help Someone Else

Sometimes a bra has plenty of wear left—it just isn’t the right fit for you. Maybe your size changed, or you bought a style that never felt quite comfortable. Those bras don’t have to stay tucked away in a drawer.

Belle Lacet partners with The Bra Recyclers to help give gently used bras another purpose and support women in need.

Bring your clean, gently used, ill-fitting bras to Belle Lacet for donation. Before dropping them off, check that the cups hold their shape, the straps are in good condition, and the hooks work. You can find more details in The Bra Recyclers’ donation guidelines.

A bra that wasn’t quite right for you could make a meaningful difference to someone else.
