Bra-Tech
Technology and the Bra
When it comes to Technology and bras there are positives and negatives. Technology has brought all kinds of advancements to the world of bras, making them more comfortable, functional, and customizable. Today we are going to take a look at some advancements that we like and some that we can live without.
FIRST A LITTLE HISTORY
The brassiere has evolved over time and continues to evolve with with our modern lifetyle. It has been transformed from a simple wrap to an extremely complicated piece of clothing and the evolution continues with high tech advancements. We’ve thrown them away out of frustration, burned them in protest and embraced them all over again for a multitude of reasons. One thing is for sure. The bra is not going away. Women have been binding and supporting their breasts with bands of cloth and leather for ages and will continue to make them part of our life in some way.
In the late 19th century inventors began working on designs for more the modern brassiere. Credit needs to be given to Herminie Cadolle, a French corset maker, who Back in 1889 invented the first modern bra. It separated and supported the breasts with shoulder straps.
Another women named Mary Phelps Jacob, a New York socialite, created a more practical bra design back in 1913 using two handkerchiefs and ribbon. She patented her invention and sold it under the name “Caresse Crosby.”
Lots of other inventors continued to refine bra designs throughout the 20th century, adding modern features that we know and lover today like underwire, padding, and adjustable straps.
MODERN ADVANCEMENTS
One of the modern advancements we find interesting is bra tape. It is a debatable option and a personal choice but modern advancements have made it a doable option for many. Here’s an example from My Perfect Pair.
With the rise of wearable technology, today we have Smart bras designed to detect breast cancer. Other Smart bras like this one from Microsoft, are equipped with sensors that can track your heart rate, breathing rate, and activity level. The information gathered can then be synced with our smartphone to provide fitness and health insights.
The rise of 3D printing technology has been used to create custom-fitted bras. By scanning a person’s body, a 3D printer can create a bra that fits perfectly. This can eliminate the need for uncomfortable underwires and straps that dig into the skin.
Let’s get real for minute. Bras were designed to carry one thing, your breasts. Pocketed bras are the exception because they are designed to carry a medical grade prosthesis. Not your keys. Okay maybe your credit card but definitely not your cell phone. Have you tried to put on lipstick that has been in your bra? How did that work out?
One of our favorite modern innovations is Moisture-Wicking fabric. Many bras, primarily sports bras, now feature moisture-wicking fabric that can help keep the skin dry and comfortable.
Anti-microbial fabric is built into some bras helping to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi. This can reduce the risk of skin infections and odors.
Some bras have wireless charging capabilities that allow them to charge electronic devices like smartphones. We are not a fan of this type of technology and would suggest seeking the advice of a medical professional before getting your electronics to close to your bra. While we are all guilty of this from time to time and it can be useful according to this article from Women’s Health it’s also a big no-no.
Sustainability is more than just a modern buzzword. While technological advancements are exciting so are modern advancements in fabric and bra manufacturing. The construction of the bra can effect the fit.
Bras and technology have come together in various ways over the years but and the ones we like the most are the ones that leave you healthier, more comfortable, confident and feeling beautiful.
If you get the most of your investment consider hand washing your bras or using a wash bag. Avoid the dryer to help them last longer. Also, make sure you are getting the proper fit. When bras fit properly, they are more comfortable and you guessed it…they last longer.
